A Response from the Jersey Hospitality Association 25th November 2003
The JHA is opposed to a BIKT. It has been suggested that in order to
avoid paying a BIKT that the tourism sector should simply assess, in an
accurate manner, the true cost to provide board and lodging, taking
into account all the relevant costs. It could then pay staff a
sufficiently greater wage than at present in order to permit them to
reimburse the true figure of the food and accommodation provided to
them by the employer.
The Tobacco Strategy was recently approved by the States and it is
expected that the measures recommended will become Law next year. From
the transcripts of the debate it would appear that the views of the
hospitality industry were not fully represented necessitating the
following respons

The JHA is dismayed by the negative implications of the 2004 Budget, in
particular the detrimental effect that some of the proposed taxation
will have on the competitiveness of Jersey’s tourism industry.
