FSA issues guidance
The Food Standards Agency has issued advice to caterers and restaurateurs following the outbreaks of E. coli in France and Germany.  Recent reports of E. coli cases in France, which followed on from those reported in Germany, have led the Food Standards Agency (FSA) to revise guidance on the consumption of sprouted seeds such as alfalfa, mung beans (usually known as bean sprouts) and fenugreek. As a precaution the agency has advised that sprouted seeds should only be eaten if they have been cooked thoroughly - until steaming hot throughout.  They should not be consumed raw.  This advice will remain in place until further notice.

The contamination is being investigated and developments are being monitored by the Health Protection Agency and FSA.  Claims which link the E. coli outbreak in France to a UK based source of sprouting seeds have not been evidenced.
